New Robotic Platforms

Standard laparoscopic instruments have limited dexterity due to their rigidity, making some surgical tasks extremely challenging. Robotic surgery was developed overcome these issues, but the da Vinci system is associated with high costs. During last few years, many companies designed and produced new robotic platforms, improve ergonomics less impact on cost effectiveness. This chapter describes main commercially available platforms for colorectal surgery, a focus technology, advantages disadvantages, architectures features. Next-generation systems mainly include modular design, open or semi-open consoles, smaller instruments, decreased cost, augmented reality. To date, there are still literature data comparing systems, as of them awaiting regulatory approval. Thus, future studies necessary assess costs, clinical outcomes sustainability.
